Abstract
Postharvest food loss (PHFL) is an emerging issue in Agricultural Supply Chains (ASC’s). The aim of this research is to explore whether Supply Chain Collaboration (SCC) which is a highly researched topic within the supply chain literature, is an appropriate concept to reduce PHFL between producers and processors. The aim is also to identify the different forms of SCC that enable this reduction. On the basis of a detailed literature review, a web-survey was deployed to respondents within the food sector who are interested in ASCs, to explore the main barriers and enablers in reducing PHFL, the main practices adopted to reduce PHFL, the relevance of collaboration as a way to reduce PHFL and the different SCC concepts that can be applied to the challenges of reducing PHFL. The survey results showed that the respondents perceived SCC to be an appropriate concept to reduce PHFL. Achieving internal collaboration and then developing collaborative relationships with suppliers were found to be essential conditions for reducing PHFL. A framework for SCC to reduce PHFL has been created. Based upon this initial analysis, avenues for further research are explored.
